The mission of the Metro Public Health Department (MPHD) is to protect, improve, and sustain the health and well]being of all people in Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County. MPHD is an award-winning, nationally-recognized department serving the residents of Music City USA, one of the fastest-growing cities in the country. MPHD is looking for a highly motivated and dedicated individual to serve as Chief Epidemiologist for the Epidemiology Program. As Chief, this position leads and is responsible for overall management and supervision of assigned personnel.
This position oversees and conducts advanced-level professional epidemiologic work, as well as supervises and directs the work activities of subordinate staff involved in epidemiological investigations. Develops disease identification, surveillance and control systems; maintains ongoing disease reporting systems; provides technical advice and assistance to all public health-delivery programs inside and outside of MPHD.
Leads and manages the Epidemiology Program, which provides epidemiology services supporting community health assessment and intervention principally for non-infectious conditions, including family & child health, chronic disease prevention, behavioral health, injury, health equity, and social determinants of health.
Plans, organizes, directs and coordinates Surveillance, Epidemiology and Evaluation for the Metro Public Health Department.
Uses data, knowledge of best practices and stakeholder input to promote an environment of continuous quality improvement and effective public health surveillance.
Responsible for administrative management of the Division, which includes fiscal oversight, financial management and supervision of staff.
Interviews, hires, coaches and trains new staff. Identifies staff development needs and ensures appropriate training of employees as needed.
Engages program units across the department and serves on internal workgroups to operationalize strategic planning goals.
Consults and collaborates with program staff and community partners on matters of epidemiologic assessment, data analysis, and program evaluation.
Makes public health data accessible, understandable, and useful for community-based prevention activities.
Establishes camaraderie and peer support with communicable disease epidemiology staff.
Serves as a leader with Metro Public Health Department, appropriately modeling and promoting the values of the Department in all interactions with internal and external customers.
A master's degree or higher in public health with an emphasis in epidemiology and four (4) years of progressively responsible full-time paid employment in related field. Three (3) years must have been in a public administration/supervisory capacity. Completed doctorate degree in a directly-related field may be substituted for one (1) year of required experience. Must be fluent in use of SAS and other statistical software. Demonstrated success as a manager, teacher, administrator and team-builder. Possess required competencies upon hiring.
Candidates with accreditations earned in a foreign institute are encouraged to apply, however at the present time MPHD is not sponsoring individuals through any of the US Governmentfs employment-based immigration programs. Preferred: SAS Certification much preferred.
Advanced knowledge of statistical methods (e.g., SEM, ordinal regression, spatial analysis, etc.).
Advanced experience in MS Office, Excel, Access.
GIS experience, grant writing and/or grant support experience.
Ability to independently extract, clean and manage data from several administrative, clinical, program and population sources.
